{"id":2180,"date":"2016-01-13T15:52:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T15:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greengumption.co.uk\/?page_id=2180"},"modified":"2016-01-13T16:02:54","modified_gmt":"2016-01-13T16:02:54","slug":"paula-owen-biog","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/greengumption.co.uk\/live\/paula-owen-biog\/","title":{"rendered":"Paula Owen &#8211; biog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An environmental and\u00a0sustainability specialist with\u00a0two decades\u00a0of professional experience in the areas of: sustainable energy; climate change and carbon footprinting\u00a0&amp; management. \u00a0Paula has a PhD in climate change chemistry from the University of Oxford, and a Masters degree from City University, London.<\/p>\n<p>Paula has worked in the academic, public, charitable, governmental and corporate sectors over her career.\u00a0 She started her professional life working for Manchester Metropolitan University running\u00a0the Global\u00a0Climate Change Information Programme\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0the first\u00a0government funded public information dissemination project on the topic.\u00a0 She then\u00a0joined the British Library heading up their environmental information services.\u00a0 From there she moved to\u00a0the (then)\u00a0new sustainable development charity Forum for the Future to take up a senior management\u00a0position, and finally worked for the Energy Saving Trust for eight years before setting up her own \u00a0agency in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4e53;\">Highlights from her career include: publishing\u00a0the book <em>Decommissioning the Brent Spar<\/em> early in her career;\u00a0the inception, research and writing of four highly regarded energy and carbon related publications: <em>The Rise of the Machines,<\/em> <em>Ampere Strikes Back, Elephant in the Living Room <\/em>and, most recently, <em>Powering the Nation. <\/em>These publications have done much to aid the understanding of the role the residential sector plays in the increasing energy demand within the UK over the last four decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Paula was the project lead in the creation of the\u00a0first official UK government\u2019s carbon calculator for the domestic sector \u2013 the <em>Act on CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/em> Calculator.\u00a0 This award-winning calculator had been an exceptional success since it was launched, but sadly disbanded by the Conservative administration when it came to power.\u00a0\u00a0She oversaw two subsequent update versions of the calculator that improved and expanded\u00a0 areas of coverage, and\u00a0developed\u00a0the iPhone App.\u00a0 Other carbon management tools have been developed for Google; the BBC and Energy Saving Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Paula has worked with a number of multinational companies on projects involving energy matters; environmental data &amp; information management and tools; employee training\u00a0and behaviour change.\u00a0\u00a0Organisations include: Procter &amp; Gamble; British Gas; BSkyB; Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Tate Museums and the Big Lottery Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Paula is also an\u00a0experienced media spokesperson and has spoken widely on all major UK broadcasting channels, as well as radio and the published media.\u00a0 Highlights include the BBC news; Sky News; BBC Radio 4\u2019s You &amp; Yours;\u00a0 It ain&#8217;t easy being green; The One Show and the Tonight Programme.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012 she was awarded a London Leaders position by the Greater London Authority and the Mayor&#8217;s Office.\u00a0 This is an honorary title that saw her\u00a0carry out a year-long project to research whether fun and games could help make Londoners more environmentally friendly.\u00a0 She also was awarded an Unltd Social entrepreneurs award to help fund this project. From that she co-funded \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ecoactiongames.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">eco action games<\/a>, a social business with the mission of saving the planet through fun.
